ACTOR Simon Callow has unveiled an unofficial blue plaque to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the book lover’s paradise of Cecil Court.

Some of the musical maestro’s most famous symphonies were played as the wine flowed and visitors enjoyed caviar blinis, salt beef and, of course, Mozartkugeln, at the ceremony in the street off Charing Cross Road on Friday.

The Austrian genius stayed at 9 Cecil Court from April 24 until August 6 1764, and some scholars believe he composed his first symphonies there.

The Cecil Court Association originally lobbied for Westminster Council to place an official plaque at the site but decided to erect its own because of delays.

Mr Callow, who played Mozart on stage in 1979 at the Royal National Theatre, said: “I am absolutely thrilled to do anything to celebrate Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.”

Cecil Court bookseller Tim Bryars, secretary of the Cecil Court Association, thanked the street’s landlord Gascoyne Holdings for supporting the event.
