Permission granted for £750m homes scheme at ex-Middlesex hospital site

The go-ahead to build nearly 300 homes on the three-acre wasteland, formerly home to the Middlesex Hospital, was given to developers last night (Thursday)

Westminster City Council planning chiefs granted permission for the £750million scheme for the site in Fitzrovia despite the fact that the developers’ consortium – a joint venture between the Icelandic bank Kaupthing, Aviva Investors and Exemplar – have designated just 54 of the 291 homes as “affordable”.

This falls short of the council’s policy that 25 per cent of the units on all new housing developments should usually be earmarked as such.

The meeting yesterday heard that the developers had agreed to pay a £300,000 “dowry” towards the upkeep of the historic chapel at the centre of the old hospital site.
