A free foot and nail care service is to be scrapped because of NHS cutbacks.
Health chiefs have recommended a new commissioning body – a group of GPs taking control of NHS budgets under government reforms – end the service from April next year.
It makes 10,000 appointments each year and has 1,787 patients on its books for residents who can’t reach their own feet, see well enough to cut their nails or hold scissors.
The majority are over 60 years old and have visual, physical, learning, breathing or bending problems.
The service – operating in five sites across the borough – was set up in 2008 after GPs complained they were spending too much time on patients who needed help taking care of their feet.
