Word reaches me of a Korean film out this week that is worth a look. Mother, starring veteran Asian screen legend Kim Hye-Ja, tells the story of a matriarch who, when her only son is accused of murder, will stop at nothing to prove his innocence and catch the real culprit.

Director Boon Joon-Ho is a hot ticket in Korea. This is his fourth feature-length movie, and his filmography is diverse.

His breakthrough flick was Memories of Murder, a thriller set in 1980s Seoul. He followed it up with The Host, a left-field offering about a family who are required to deal with a monster that emerges from the Han River in the centre of Seoul.

Meanwhile, those excellent programmers at the Prince Charles Cinema, off Leicester Square, love to go through the back catalogues and give you the chance to see a film on a big screen that has long been retired to the TV schedules.

Known for its sing-along screenings of The Sound of Music and The Rocky Horror Show, the venue has recently been screening a night of silent movies with live musical accompaniment on the last Thursday of each month.

But it’s not all frivolous fun. On Monday night they are presenting a double bill of The French Connection and The Taking of Pelham 123.

Next week, Christopher Nolan’s Memento starring Guy Pearce is running, as is the classic Coen Brothers flick, The Big Lebowski.

What a good idea.
