WHEN Arsenal signed Harold Edwin Clamp from Wolverhampton Wanderers in November 1961 for a fee of £32,000 it sparked more than just a British transfer record at the time.
The tough-tackling midfielder, known simply as Eddie, was reaching the top of his game, and even played three matches for England in the 1958 World Cup.
His Gunners career, however, lasted just 10 months before he joined Stanley Matthews at Stoke, where Eddie went on to win the Second Division title.
Yet his time living in Park Drive in Golders Green was fondly remembered, especially by his young son Adrian.
“Coming down to London with my family gave me my first taste of the big city – I was fascinated by it and knew that I wanted to come here again when I was older,” saysAdrian.
So when the part-time teacher put together his latest art exhibition, Responses and Interpretations, he felt it would be a fitting tribute to return to north London to display his work.
The collection of paintings, drawings and prints focus on various aspects of life, including what people perceive as beauty. “I wanted to hold the exhibition somewhere where people might remember my dad,” says Adrian.
“I’ve invited former Arsenal striker Ian Wright. Anyone who wants to pop in and take a look is more than welcome.”
• Responses and Interpretations is at Lauderdale House, Highgate Hill, N6, from September 1-12.
