Chinese artist Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) surpassed Picasso (1881-1973) as top auction earner on January 13.
Daqian generated $506.7million from auctions in 2011; Picasso earned $311.6million.
In their day, the artists were aware of each other’s work, and this Clarissa Von Spee’s new book, Modern Chinese Painting and Calligraphy (British Museum Publishing, £19.99) refers to their artistic exchanges.
Beautifully illustrated, this introduction to Chinese ink paintings and calligraphy from the 20th and 21st centuries explores the contributions of artists who helped shape the image of modern China.
The work of these artists is put in the context of the political climate and events of the time in which they were created.
The book is published in April to coincide with an exhibtion at the British Museum from May 3 -September 2.
