On behalf of the City of Westminster, I would like to wish you all a very Happy Chinese New Year.

Here in Westminster we have a long history of celebrating and enjoying the rich Chinese culture present throughout our great City.

We like to celebrate the New Year in various ways – through compiling a select list of books with a Chinese themes and by adorning Chinatown with lanterns and dragons.

Westminster is proud to have the historic, culturally rich and vibrant Chinatown in our city. Not only is Chinatown an integral part of London’s history, dating back to the 1950s, but in providing world-class cuisine, it also provides jobs and is critical to the West End’s night life and economy.

The success of Chinatown would not be possible without the hard work of the Chinese community.

In the coming year I look forward to us again joining forces with the Chinese community, celebrating the Chinese culture of the City and showcasing this unique part of Westminster to the wider world during the Olympics and Diamond Jubilee.

Colin Barrow
Leader, Westminster City Council
