CHRISOPHER Maltman, widely regarded as one of the finest English baritones of his generation, opening the Wigmore Hall’s 2011-12 season with a great Lieder recital on Saturday evening.
Accompanied once again by pianist Graham Johnson, Maltman will explore the most intimate songs of Schubert, Schuman and Liszt, focusing on settings of poetry by Friedrich von Schiller.
Other highlights of the Wigmore season include song recitals by Christian Gerhaher, Jonas Kaufmann, Joyce DiDonato and Magdalena Kozena; romantic music explorations by the Nash Ensemble; and piano recitals by Paul Lewis, Christian Zacharias, Andras Schiff and Stephen Kovacevich.
For early music enthusiasts, there’s a series exploring William Byrd.
