IT has long been considered one of London’s finest fringe venues, but now it seems the Old Red Lion is intent on becoming even more of a success with a bunch of new artistic directors at the helm.

Henry Filloux-Bennett, Stephen Makin and Kellie Spooner took over the reins at the St John Street venue in May and have been attracting some big names to its stage ever since. Now set to join their ranks is Matthew Dunster, who directed Love the Sinner – Drew Pautz’s comic drama about Anglicanism – at the National Theatre earlier this year.

Next week he will oversee the premiere of award-winning playwright Nicholas Pierpan’s one man show The Maddening Rain.

The hotly anticipated play focusses on the global recession and follows the fortunes of an employee in a City equity finance department.

The Maddening Rain is at the Old Red Lion, 418 St John Street, Angel, from August 31-September 18. Tues-Sat 7.30pm, Sat-Sun 3pm. £13, £11 concs. 020 7837 7816.
